Look for the polyphenol claim on the label!
What is a claim? The claims on the label are health claims regulated by EU Regulation 432/2012, which highlight the beneficial effect produced by a substance (in the case of oil, polyphenols) naturally present in a food. One in particular is exclusive to EVO Oil While some claims are found in other products, the Polyphenols claim is found only in EVO oil, and is this: “Polyphenols in olive oil contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 20 g of olive oil.” The claim on polyphenols is reserved exclusively for olive oils and the oil that reports it on the label must possess, at the time of bottling, a rather high quantity of bio-phenols. Our AURUM Pitted Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil and this year also our PGI Lucano Oil perfectly respect this characteristic. The Polyphenols of our AURUM: a High Quality oil, a supply chain product Aurum , the organic pitted extra virgin olive oil from Frantoio Pace, at the time of bottling contains 612 mg/kg of polyphenols (biophenols), namely: 12.24 mg of hydroxytyrosol in 20 g of olive oil. In order for an oil to carry the polyphenol claim on the label it must contain at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol per 20 g of olive oil . Our AURUM therefore contains 2.5 times the minimum amount of polyphenols needed to have a beneficial effect on protecting blood lipids from oxidative stress. Polyphenols are hydrophilic substances that are very difficult to preserve during oil processing. Their presence in oil depends on the origin of the olive cultivar, agronomic practices, and technological processes. This means that to obtain a high-quality extra virgin olive oil, defined as rich in polyphenols, the olives must be harvested early, processed promptly, and cold-pressed to maintain the content of bioactive phenolic substances required to meet the claim. Only careful and thorough monitoring of the entire supply chain allows this important result to be achieved. Always look for the health claim about polyphenols on the label, which helps you distinguish a high-quality extra virgin olive oil from a common olive oil.
