DISCOVER OUR PRODUCTS The first to talk about Mother's Day was Julia Ward Howe, a pacifist and abolitionist activist, in May 1870, who actually proposed the institution of Mother's Day for Peace, as a moment of reflection against war. However, her idea was not accepted. Instead, Anna Jarvis first celebrated the modern holiday of Mother's Day in 1908 to commemorate her mother, a peace activist. Jarvis's supporters proposed to ministers and businessmen that the holiday be made a national day to be commemorated annually, and by 1911, the custom had spread to nearly every American state. In 1914, US President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the holiday a national holiday, and the custom of giving pink roses to mothers became widespread. Mother's Day, however , has much more ancient origins. In ancient traditions, Mother's Day symbolized the passage from the cold of winter to the rebirth of spring. And in almost all ancient civilizations, there's the presence of a Great Mother, a female deity venerated as the bringer of life. For the Greeks, she was the goddess Rhea, mother of all the gods; for the Romans, she was Cybele. Keep in mind that your mother won't necessarily appreciate an expensive gift, because never more than on this occasion, what matters is the loving thought behind it. If you want to create something for Mother's Day, focus more on the originality and meaning of the gift than on its financial value. For many mothers, the most appreciated gift is time: give her an afternoon all to herself, which she can even spend at home. Maybe prepare the meals yourself, or write a note telling her that on this day at home she doesn't have to do anything except indulge in DIY beauty treatments or binge-watch her favorite TV series. How to celebrate it Since we'll likely be celebrating this special occasion at home, we can make this day unique and exciting by organizing a lunch with the children. Dad can plan a menu and involve the little ones in preparing the recipes. The star of our recipe will be a healthy and readily available ingredient : extra virgin olive oil . Some people substitute it for butter, due to intolerances or dietary restrictions; others reinvent classic recipes, making them lighter; and there are also many vegan versions of traditional desserts. But to find a delicious dessert using extra virgin olive oil, you don't need to search websites and specialized magazines: just look to the past, to recipes from a time when oil was the star. Especially in the biscuits and dry sweets typical of the peasant culture of Central and Southern Italy: a precious ingredient like extra virgin olive oil, in fact, was never wasted, and to save every last drop, families invent alternative preparations. Not a substitute, therefore, but a main ingredient, the key to obtaining delicious, soft desserts that, above all, can be kept longer than those made with butter, which lose their softness more quickly. Cake with extra virgin olive oil It's a soft cake, easy to prepare and with EVO olive oil, the flavor is delicate and delicious and it's not at all greasy or heavy and for once I can have a breakfast that's a little different than usual. You can also stuff it, of course, but we recommend trying it as is because it's truly fabulous! Ingredients 300 g 00 flour 180 g sugar 100 ml Lucano PGI Oil - Pitted Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil - 2020/2021 Frantoio F.lli Pace 50 ml Milk 3 Eggs Lemon zest 1 sachet of baking powder Find out more about our Pitted Oil Preparation Place the eggs and sugar in a bowl and beat with an electric whisk until the mixture becomes frothy and white. Add the room-temperature milk and continue beating with an electric mixer. Add the extra virgin olive oil ( Olio Lucano PGI - Pitted Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil - 2020/2021 Frantoio F.lli Pace ) and, little by little, the sifted flour and grated lemon zest. Finally, add the sifted baking powder and mix thoroughly. Grease a cake pan well and pour the mixture in, smoothing the surface. Bake the cake with extra virgin olive oil in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 40 minutes. Before removing the cake from the oven, always test with a toothpick; if it comes out clean, the cake is cooked. Let the cake cool completely and dust it with powdered sugar, if desired. Variations and suggestions If you like, you can add a little lemon juice for an even more fragrant cake. You can also replace 50 grams of flour with the same amount of potato starch, making the cake even softer.
