How Much Does Olive Oil Cost? Trends and Suggestions

⏱ 3 min
The price of extra virgin olive oil is one of the factors to consider when buying this product. It's important to understand, in fact, that the monetary value of the oil and the resulting selling price is determined based on different parameters. To give consumers an idea of the main market price changes we took into account the data released by Unaprol in the third week of January 2013.

Oil Market and Price According to Unaprol

How much does olive oil cost according to Unaprol? The trend in extra virgin price lists is upward, having recorded increases of around 2% compared to previous readings. At the moment, the price of extra virgin olive oil is standardised at around 3.07 per kilo, unlike lampante oil, which has seen a considerable drop to 2.37 per kilo.  Extra virgin olive oil can classify products based on the quantity of oleic acid they contain. Based on this, a distinction can be made between extra virgin olive oil, which must not have an oleic acid percentage higher than 0.8%, and virgin olive oil, of slightly lower quality, which has a free acidity of no more than 2%. Finally, there is lampante virgin olive oil which has a taste and acidity above 2%. It cannot be consumed directly but must undergo a refining process that can correct its characteristics so as to make it ready for consumption.According to data released by Unaprol, the price of extra virgin olive oil is rising, even though the market is stationary. Especially in Calabria, in the Gioia Tauro area, rising prices have been recorded because the olive harvest campaigns are being delayed due to the unstable weather of this past year. As for the olive oil market, the wholesale product segment must also be taken into account. In this case too, increases in the prices of refined olive and pomace oils have been recorded.

Oil Prices for Producers

Following the decisions taken by the markets and the main trends recorded, it should be kept in mind that the price of the oil, born from the professionalism of extra virgin olive oil producers, arises from numerous factors. In addition to the costs related to managing and sourcing raw materials, a production company must consider the costs of processing and storing the oil. The olives must be cold-pressed and stored in temperature-controlled environments. Once the oil has passed analysis and inspection it must be bottled, packaged and then transported from the producer to the point of sale. In the case of Frantoio Oleario Pace this passage happens directly from the producer to the consumer.

Oil Prices in International Markets

As for international markets, each one sets a specific price for extra virgin olive oil based on quotations. Spain has recorded a considerable increase in price lists, while in Tunisia prices have seen a slight decline. The Frantoio Oleario Pace, to help consumers who are by now worn out by the rising prices of extra virgin olive oil, offers special packages and packs at truly advantageous prices.
